Here’s one of my newest projects for a Mexican in-flight magazine called enVIVA for VivaAerobus published by Ink. This was inked and then painted with acrylic. I did a full page and a drop cap Illustration. Thanks so much to Shane Luitjens for giving me such a fun job! This is available as a giclĂ©e print at my Etsy shop.
I really love working on hand-lettering lately especially if it involves loud colours and big flowers. This article was about the hey days of Acapulco in the 1930s, 40s & 50s. Stars such as John Wayne, Errol Flyn, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, John and Jacqueline Kennedy drank their cocktails on its famous beaches. Here’s the final spread. I toned down the vibrant colours a tad to match the vintage photograph.
I was inspired by old textile floral prints and vintage postcards for this one. I love it when the old print layers aren’t lined up quite right. Check out the lady on the matchbook. That face has character. I’ve also included a bunch of the Mexican hand painted type. Love how worn it looks. The imperfections really add so much. Sadly I can’t take credit for these photos, I found them randomly on the internet. A special thanks to the person who shot the last one. I believe it’s from a church wall and says, “thou shalt not pee”. That’s great! Hopefully it did the trick.
Here’s some of my process for the project. At the linear stage I usually draw all the various elements separately and then combine them together in Photoshop. I find this gives me more freedom and flexibility with the composition. I think Shane made the wisest decision to go with the sassy lady. Recently I’ve been experimenting with blocking out my shapes and painting them first then inking over the top. I like the “old-timey” printed look of it. Hope you like it!
Fun to see your research material. The shots of your physical piece in stages really gets across the craftsmanship involved. Looking forward to more posts!
I love the process, it’s so great to see how it all happens!!
